Launched as New England’s original Belgian-style brewery, Allagash Brewing Company developed into one of the industry’s most well-respected brands, boasting a delicious variety of traditional experimental Belgian-style brews and a unique facility close to downtown Portland.

Though the brewery offers tours, typically lasting around an hour and including a guided tasting for four beers, we didn’t have time and also didn’t make a reservation in advance when we visited the brewery. Those interested in touring the facility can check the scheduling link online for availability and purchase free tickets.

Instead, we checked out the retail store for a tasting involving four three-ounce samples of rotating beers. To our delight, the tasting was free of charge and involved no wait time. We found two open seats at the bar in a room packed with brew enthusiasts from around the world and started our sampling straight from the source. In addition to the popular White, we tried Confluence, a delicious American wild ale; Fluxus, a tasty Belgian blonde; Moira, a citrusy-smelling Belgian IPA with mocha flavors; and House Beer, a Belgian pale ale.
After thoroughly enjoying both the brews and the laidback and welcoming atmosphere, we checked out all the unique souvenirs, including a great selection of bottle-conditioned beers, and headed to downtown Portland for dinner, located only a short 15-minute drive away.
