Many of America’s parks were built by volunteers, and continue to be maintained by environmentally conscious voluntourists. If you are looking for an adventure that will also help communities across the United States, consider a volunteer vacation with the American Hiking Society.
The Maryland-based non-profit was founded in 1976, dedicated to protecting the natural wonders of America and the trails that run through them. Crews of six to 15 volunteers are organized and accompanied by an AHS crew leader to maintain trails, repair bridges and build railings. The organization sends more than 500 people on 80 trips a year, with locations in 30 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Volunteer vacations are typically around a week long, and require 20–40 hours of work. There are trips for every fitness level, with car camping and indoor accommodations for beginners and more strenuous wilderness backpacking for veteran hikers. American Hiking Society also organizes National Trails Day, which will be held June 6, 2015. Events across the country will feature hikes, water activities, bird watching, gear demonstrations and other outdoor activities.
