American Sardine Bar is one of my favorite bars in Philadelphia. Located in the up-and-coming Point Breeze neighborhood, the bar’s décor is both quirky and inviting. A large tin sardine can hangs above the entryway. Inside, the floor is a black-and-white checkerboard tile and a large mirror spans the bar. In the warmer months, the patio is a great spot to enjoy your meal or drinks.
The ever-changing menu highlights local, seasonal ingredients in addition to a set of standard fare. Sardines are served four ways: sautéed, grilled, plancha or fried. A sardine sandwich is another staple menu item. Sandwiches rotate, depending on the season, while most of the sides are available year-round.
To drink, I chose Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Commonwealth Dry Cider. We ordered the salt and pepper fries with pickle dip to start. The tangy sauce pairs perfectly with the well-seasoned skinny-cut fries — these fries are addicting!
With a wide selection of options on the menu, I decided on Handsome Fred’s ham and cheese sandwich. The basic item was spiced up with grainy mustard and caramelized onions and served on grilled marble rye bread. My dining companion ordered the braised short rib sandwich with creamy horseradish on a poppy-seed potato roll. Envious of each other’s food, we decided to split the sandwiches.
I’ve never been disappointed by American Sardine Bar. I highly recommend stopping in for a drink and a bite when you’re in Philadelphia.
