It’s hard to find someone that hasn’t at least considered buying an old Volkswagen Combi and driving off into the sunset. While the Tepui Ayer rooftop tent may not be quite as romantic, it allows you to do much the same thing using your normal car.
Rooftop tents have become more popular in recent years, and California-based Tepui Tents offer the Ayer as an entry-level option which fits perfectly on top of smaller vehicles. The two-man tent weighs only 95 pounds, and has ample space for two occupants with a footprint of 48 inches by 84 inches.
Its 600D ripstop ventilate-coated poly-cotton shell means you’ll be safely protected from high winds and heavy rain, and you can enjoy a sound night’s sleep on the built-in mattress, which is closer to sleeping in your own bed than camping on the ground. The tent is fixed on the rooftop bars on top of your vehicle using universal mounting brackets, and access is via a telescopic ladder, which at 8 feet, 6 inches is long enough even for those with taller vehicles.
Choose from either blue or tan colorways when placing your order on the Tepui website, where the Ayer is on sale for $820. Customers looking for more space are advised to check out the larger Kukenam model, a three-man tent which starts at $1,050.
The Tepui Ayer can be used without any special equipment at all, making camping trips possible for almost everyone. Take your life on the road without having to buy a rickety old camper van.
