Gettysburg is filled with historic spots to explore, but what about when it comes to your accommodations? Can the historic adventure and intrigue continue once you’ve left the battlefield? It certainly can if you’re staying at Baladerry Inn.
One of the most historic inns in Gettysburg, the property includes an original, historic main house built in 1812, along with a newer, yet still historic, carriage house. Both offer multiple, bed-and-breakfast-style bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, as well as additional seating and social spaces in the main house and private outdoor spaces off the carriage house guestrooms.
Not only is the inn itself simply historic thanks to its more than 200-year-old architecture, but, as did most historic structures in Gettysburg, the inn played a role in the Civil War. The main house acted as a Civil War field hospital for the Army of the Potomac, given its close proximity to the battlefield.
Now, I know what you’re wondering — is it haunted?
The verdict is still out, but the inn does have a binder discretely tucked away in one corner of one of its sitting rooms, filled with guests’ stories of their ghostly experiences and some photos of supposed ghosts and orbs appearing on the inn’s lawn and in guestroom windows. Certain ghostly legends popped up, including that of one ghostly lad who roams the halls looking in on his wounded comrades and a handsy spirit with a preference for blondes.
But while we’ve still yet to decide if the Baladerry Inn is a spooky stay or not, I can definitively say it does have old-fashioned hospitality down pat.
Upon first arrival, the friendly inn cat greets guests before meeting the inn owners who show you to your guestroom. Guestrooms are comfortably outfitted in a homey décor with plenty of space. During my visit I had a guestroom in the carriage house, which offered lots of space both indoors and out. I enjoyed the first-floor patio with seating and a view of the neighborhood deer, an easy six or seven that visited daily to sniff out the proffered grain at one edge of the property. The outdoor seating was a great spot for sipping a cup of coffee each morning.
As the inn is a bed and breakfast, breakfast was served each day. The staff was quick to accommodate my food allergies and offered a variety of yummy dishes to fuel my Gettysburg adventures.
The clientele at Baladerry Inn seemed similar to my husband and myself — couples traveling into the area for its historic appeal, more or less looking for a quiet place to stay and a relaxing environment with its own historic appeal.
And historic appeal is what the inn has in droves, making it the perfect place to stay in Gettysburg for history buffs, and especially for those who may just want a little fun, spooky intrigue added in for good measure.
