Planning a trip to Copenhagen soon? You can earn some pretty neat (and free) items as a “green” tourist. The city announced it will reward sustainable behavior by offering free services and goods to tourists who visit Copenhagen and perform actions to reduce their impact on the city’s ecosystem.
Called CopenPay, this new program offers free activities and experiences like kayak rentals, guided museum tours and vegetarian lunch in exchange for doing things like cycling, volunteering and helping with clean-up programs.
What are some other ways to have an eco-friendly holiday in Copenhagen? Head to National Gallery of Denmark with plastic waste and take part in a workshop to turn it into a piece of art. Take public transport or bike to Copenhagen’s iconic heating plant to have the unique experience of skiing down its slope on the building’s roof.
“We want visitors to make conscious, green choices and hopefully end up getting even better experiences while they visit,” said Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, CEO, Wonderful Copenhagen. “Through CopenPay we therefore aim to incentivize tourists’ sustainable behavior while enriching their cultural experience of our destination.”
It’s easy to participate. Simply show your train ticket, arrive on a bicycle, or present some other proof of green actions to redeem your rewards. Updates on available attractions and rewards can be found here. The pilot project will run through Aug. 11.
