Tips / Destination

Italians are particular (and proud) about coffee. Be sure to know the basics before attempting to order on your next trip to Italy, and look like a pro. Here are some of the standard orders for coffee lovers. Be advised, any orders with milk are meant for the morning, and you will get a funny look ordering one past noon.

Un Caffé: One shot of espresso, the standard order

Un Caffé Macchiato: Espresso with a drop of milk

Un Caffé Americano: Espresso with added hot water

Un Cappuccino: An espresso with steamed milk and cacao powder, this is a morning drink only for Italians

Un Caffé Freddo: Iced coffee for those missing their Starbucks fix

Order and pay at the till, then drink at the bar like an Italian. Most orders are never more than €2 and all come in the same size, so don’t try to order a venti. Don’t worry, though, you’ll be getting plenty of caffeine.

Italians are known for their leisurely attitudes — coffee here is meant to be enjoyed and savored, so no to-go cups.
