Big cities are always main draws for travelers because of the prevalence of history, culture, art and familiar amenities. Lodging, however, is something that gets more expensive as you get closer to the center of the city amid the sought-after attractions. Fortunately, some large cities have smaller neighboring towns where you can find less expensive hotels and a pleasant retreat from the busy metropolis.
Alexandria, Va.
A few miles and a short Metro ride from the nation’s capital sits the historic town of Alexandria where delectable seafood, delicious Virginia wine and exquisite shopping await. Nestled on the banks of the Potomac River, small boats transport passengers to D.C. or Maryland’s National Harbor.
Evergreen, Colo.
This tiny mountainside town outside Denver provides a relaxing respite from the mile-high city. Soak in the natural wonders that abound, from lakes and wildlife to just a hint of what comprises Colorado’s awe-inspiring scenery.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
This alternative to the electric city of Miami can serve as a vacation destination in itself; it even has its own airport. Miles of beaches, high-class shopping and friendlier prices than its neighbor 30 miles to the south, Fort Lauderdale is a less hectic option for a southern Florida vacation.
Salem, Mass.
When you need a break from the intensity of Beantown (a.k.a. Boston), a short ferry ride to Salem might be in order. Visit the sites where the Salem Witch Trials were held, and spend a cozy night in a New England bed and breakfast.
