Tips / Travel

A getaway to the water offers much-needed solace, peace and stunning vistas, as well as a chance to forget about everyday hassles. The next time you are planning a vacation to a lake, consider one of following, which are known to be some of the world´s best havens for a placid holiday.

Crystal Lake, Mich.

Nestled not too far from Lake Michigan is a body of water that appropriately represents its name. Quiet vacation homes and charming hotels dot the shores of the lake where sunsets of orange and red fill the skies at dusk. During the day, sunbathe on the beaches, fish for your dinner and cook it under the stars before you rest under the dark Michigan sky.

Crater Lake, Ore.

After a volcano collapsed, a lake formed on the border of Wizard Island. Crater Lake is the deepest (and probably bluest) lake in the United States with a maximum depth of 1,943 feet. Boat tours and campgrounds are available for visitors to the clear waters.

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Get your cameras ready because it is tough to beat the scenery and expansive skies surrounding this Central American lake. Formed at the foot of three volcanoes, the name of the lake means ¨at the water¨ in Nahuati.

Peyto Lake, Canada

This glacier-fed lake is part of Banff National Park in Alberta. Its characteristic turquoise color is unlike any of the other contenders on the list, and is best seen during the warmer months.
