We can barely get around without our smartphones in America these days, so we definitely don’t want to leave them behind when we travel. But how do you avoid incurring ridiculous roaming charges when you do? Here are the best mobile carriers to have as travelers.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile is, hands down, the best option for international travelers. Their Simple Choice plans give you free data outside the United States. The speeds aren’t spectacular, usually around 2G, but you also have the option of purchasing international data passes for faster access.
- Single-day pass: $15 for 100MB
- Seven-day pass: $25 for 200MB
- 14-day pass: $50 for 500MB
Sprint
Sprint just announced its International Value Roaming service, meaning customers now have free unlimited roaming in 15 countries throughout the world. Without the new service, Sprint charges customers $4.99 per month and pay-as-you-go rates between $1.99 and $5.99 depending on the country.
Purchase Your Own SIM Card
Truth be told, if you’re using either of the other Big 2 carriers, AT&T or Verizon, you’re best bet is to get an unlocked phone and purchase a local SIM card once you reach your destination. Their rates are higher than necessary if you try and stick with their international plans and the SIM cards can save you a bunch of money.
