With Halloween fast approaching, here is your guide to where best to celebrate the festival of ghouls and goblins.
Some places are inherently spooky thanks to their history, and Salem, Mass., is one such place. After 26 people were put to death for being witches here, the town has been associated with all things creepy. Halloween celebrations last the entire month of October, and there are plenty of special events.
While Halloween may be celebrated with the greatest fervor in the United States, the festival is said to have originated in Ireland. Head to Derry City to see where it all began under the traditional name of Samhain Night.
Back stateside, Sleepy Hollow has also become famous for spooky goings-on. Visit the Phillipsburg Manor as the 300-year-old home is converted into a terrifying Halloween spectacle with high-tech special effects. Celebrations run for the whole of October.
On the West Coast, you should head to Long Beach, Calif., for a truly horrifying experience. The cruise liner Queen Mary is converted into a house of horrors that comes with a health warning. There are no children allowed at the Dark Harbor Halloween events, and with good reason!
For readers in Europe, the British capital of London is a great Halloween destination. From the famous London dungeons to guided tours of Jack the Ripper’s old stomping ground, there are plenty of places that will give you shivers up your spine.
