The Institute of Contemporary Art will host the first British exhibition of U.S. sculptor Betty Woodman’s work.

Woodman has been working with ceramics since the 1950s, long before the medium became one of art’s hottest trends in 2015. Although Woodman has a storied history, the exhibition will focus on work produced in the last 10 years. In 2006, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York put on a major retrospective of Woodman’s work, highlighting her importance among post-WWII artists.

Her work is brightly colored, inspired by Minoan and Egyptian art right through to painters such as Picasso and Matisse. Although she started making works from clay, her work has evolved over time. In the last few years, Woodman has started incorporating far more painting in her work, producing mixed-media pieces.

The ICA exhibition follows hot on the heels of another solo show in Florence, Italy, a city that has become a second home to Woodman. She has lived and worked there for six months every year for 50 years.

The exhibition will run through April 10 and entry costs just $1.50. Combine a trip with a visit to the Tate Modern and the Photographer’s Gallery for a cultural day out in the British capital.
