Fans of the visual arts will be pleasantly surprised by Australia’s largest visual arts festival, the Biennale of Sydney. The international festival is held only once every two years, with the next arriving spring 2016.
Next year’s Biennale will mark the 20th event and is expected to bring in larger numbers than ever before. The 19th Biennale hosted more than 623,000 visitors, with more than one-quarter of them traveling overseas. It’s a lively event that takes place in and around one of the city’s major art galleries, usually The Art Gallery of NSW.
The area comes alive with street performers, sculpted artworks, dancers and other intriguing sites for kids and adults. It’s an explosion of visual events and there’s often more than you can possibly get through in one trip. That’s probably why the entire event lasts 12 weeks, so you have a chance to return.
One of the highlights of the previous Biennale was an indoor forest in which the artist, Yingmei Duan, lived during the entirety of the event. The Biennale is entirely supported through donations, as admission is free to the public.
If you’re looking for a sensory overload of unique, spirited and colorful performances, this is one of the memorable experiences the city of Sydney has to offer.
