Ride farther, faster and easier with the Copenhagen Wheel, a smart-wheel designed to transform your bicycle into an electric hybrid, from Massachusetts-based Superpedestrian.

Featuring a motor, batteries, multiple sensors, wireless connectivity and an embedded control system, the Wheel learns how bikers pedal and then seamlessly integrates with their motion, multiplying pedal power three to 10 times.

The wheel’s onboard electronics are able to sense how hard the rider is pedaling and trigger the motor to help when assistance is needed. If the rider is heading up a steep hill and needs a little boost, the motor will contribute more and help hills feel flat. If cruising comfortably, the motor may not run at all.

The rider predetermines how much powered assistance is needed via a smartphone app. The complimentary app allows users to track personal usage statistics such as time, distance, calories burned and elevation climbed. Riders can also lock and unlock their wheel until they’re ready to bike again.

The Copenhagen Wheel features a 350-watt hub motor, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a range of approximately 31 miles and a top assisted speed of 20 miles per hour. Weighing 12 pounds, it is available in 26-inch or 700c-rim sizes.

Interested bikers can pre-order the Copenhagen Wheel online for the price of $949. You can also visit Superpedestrian’s headquarters in Cambridge, Mass., to test ride on Friday afternoons free of charge. Register online to choose your date and time to save a spot to take the Copenhagen wheel for a spin and get a tour of the unique shop.
