If you are a keen bird watcher, there aren’t many better destinations than Portugal. The small country packs in around 100 different spots where you can see all kinds of birds.
One of the most famous places is the Peneda-Geres National Park, near the northern border with Spain. Watch out for Peregrine Falcons, European Honey Buzzards and Common Whitethroats dotted around the mountains, marshland and forests of the park.
Another spot in northern Portugal is Montesinho Natural Park in the Tras-Os-Montes region. Check out the Vinhais Biology Park, where you can spot Golden Eagles among other birds, as well as deer, wolves and wild boar.
On the eastern border with Spain lies the International Tagus Natural Park, home to around 150 bird species including eagles, vultures and warblers. You can get around on foot or by canoeing.
Closer to Lisbon is the Sado Estuary, around an hour south of the capital city. You will find herons and ospreys as well as more than 100 other species, plus there are great beaches and opportunities to see dolphins.
Another alternative is the Serra de Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal. Due to changeable weather conditions, it’s best to avoid the winter months.
