Of the many restaurants to be found in Antigua, Guatemala, Bistrot Cinq is unique in the fact it is the only one which attempts to capture the essence of a French bistro. The décor transports you back to the Old Continent, and you almost expect to be served by a haughty Parisian waiter rather than a charming Guatemalan.
The menu is stuffed with classic dishes such as steak frites and frog legs, as well as local fish dishes. The honey-glazed duck breast was cooked to perfection, and the accompanying fig sauce added a sweet accompaniment.
For fish lovers, the trout amandine comes highly recommended, and the seared salmon is seductively simple. Although there are some imaginative dishes on offer, the main selling point for Bistrot Cinq is the kitchen’s ability to do the simple things well, using high-quality ingredients.
Everyone in my party was impressed by the food and the service, as well as the choice of wine. If the food menu seems a little unambitious at times, the same cannot be said of the drinks. Bistrot Cinq is the only venue in town, and reportedly Latin America, that offers a selection of absinthe, as well as a full menu of hand-crafted cocktails.
Bistrot Cinq prices itself in the upper echelons of the Antiguan culinary scene and the solid bistro fare, combined with an excellent drinks menu, means the restaurant is perfect for those looking to experience a little slice of France in Guatemala.
