Supporting small, independent businesses is a great option for anyone looking to boost a local community with a unique shopping experience. These Black-owned bookstores around the United States are a great place to start.

Harriet’s Bookshop
Jeannine A. Cook opened her Philadelphia independent bookstore and creative space in early 2020. Named for Harriet Tubman, the store celebrates women authors, artists and activists.

The Dock Bookshop
Located in Fort Worth, Texas, The Dock Bookshop opened its doors in 2008. The 4,000-square-foot store boasts an extensive collection of books for all ages, as well as apparel, stationary and other gifts.

Loyalty Bookstore
Loyalty Bookstore’s aim is to provide the Mid-Atlantic region with a neighborhood spot for books, gifts and events. Hannah Oliver Depp, a Black and queer bookseller, founded the store and works to provide an inclusive environment. Loyalty has two locations: Silver Spring, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

Marcus Books
The oldest Black-owned bookstore in the United States is located in Oakland, California. Specializing in books by and about Black people, the store recently began increasing its online presence following COVID-19 closures.

Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing
Open since 1988, the store offers a selection of literature, reference material and art books for all ages. Custom framing services are also available. Located in Little Rock, Arkansas, the store hosts a variety of cultural events and programs.

Semicolon Bookstore
Semicolon is the only Black woman-owned bookstore and gallery space in Chicago. The store’s mission is to nurture the connection between literature, art and knowledge.
