Set at the foot of Boulder, Colo.’s, stunning Flatiron Mountains, Chautauqua Park enjoys lovely surroundings. In summer, wildflowers add more drama to the alpine scenery.
The park’s myriad cabins are straightforward: utilitarian but comfortable, you won’t find expensive artwork or high-end furnishings, but they’re tastefully done and have everything you need. Bonus for the kitchens, which allow guests to cook a big breakfast and head out into the mountains for the day.
The location is the best part of staying here. You can literally walk out of your cabin and onto hiking trails that lead into the Flatirons. It’s a great place for a family vacation or reunion; everyone can stay within walking distance of one another and there’s a large field for a wedding or group game of kickball, as well as basketball and tennis courts.
You’ll also want to make time to eat in the main dining room, which is a boisterous place to enjoy brunch or dinner on a summer weekend. The food is outstanding, but make a reservation or you’ll face a long wait for a table at peak times.
The only complaint is every cabin during a recent stay wasn’t ready at check in. The delay lasted anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, a disappointment when you’ve arrived at check-in time and expect to be able to unpack and settle in after a long trip.
