Reviews / Restaurant

Looking to try a restaurant in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood where I hadn’t dined before, I decided on Bourbon & Branch. We arrived at the hip bar and restaurant around 6 p.m. on a Sunday evening and it was packed. There was no host or hostess, and we weren’t sure of the seating process, so we waited near the bar until a gentleman approached us asking if we needed a table. He led us to the back of the restaurant. The table was cramped and the area had dim lighting, so we asked if we could order food from the bar instead. He seemed annoyed, though he obliged.

Once at the bar, service was slow and the bartender forgot my drink until I reminded him. We enjoyed perusing the menus, printed and pasted within the pages of children’s books. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich. All sandwiches come with parmesan-truffle chips or you can upgrade to a salad or fries for an additional cost. This was one of the better turkey sandwiches I’ve had. The house-smoked turkey was tender and flavorful. It was topped with bacon, avocado, Swiss cheese and chipotle aioli all on country white bread. My companion ordered the buffalo fried chicken sandwich. While I was happy with my selection, I did have a bit of food envy when I tried a bite of his sandwich.

While we were slightly disappointed by the service, the tasty sandwiches won us over. I look forward to my next visit.
