A number of couples planning destination weddings are also interested in being married in the traditional local custom, and the Mayan wedding ceremonies are certainly unique.
Although the traditions are dying out, it is still possible to be married according to the Mayan tradition in Guatemala and parts of Mexico. Instead of a minister or a Catholic priest, ceremonies are conducted by a Mayan shaman in the local dialect.
The emphasis is on connecting with nature, as well as entering into a new spiritual life with your partner. The burning of the sacred copal tree at the beginning of the ceremony is designed to cleanse your spirit and the ceremonial area before you embark on your new journey, and the blowing of the conch shell summons the gods of the four cardinal points.
Couples must prove their wish to love each other selflessly, purely and elevate their wishes to the gods. Upon doing so, the shaman will pronounce them married. Traditionally an animal such as a turkey, chicken, goat or cow would have been sacrificed in order for the celebratory banquet to begin, but many modern ceremonies omit this part of the ritual.
During the time of the ancient Maya, most couples were monogamous but men could be polygamous if they so desired. Rest assured your Mayan marriage ceremony does not bind you to the same rules; you can decide those for yourself.
