February marks the celebration of Black History Month. This year, consider a trip to Greater Palm Springs, California, and participate in a variety of events throughout the month.
Learn more about the area’s history on a Palm Springs Black History Tour. The tour introduces travelers to key Black figures in the city’s history, including architect Paul R. Williams and land developer/city planner Lawrence Crossley. Lasting two–three hours, the tour concludes with a visit to Desert Highland Gateway Estates, Palm Springs’ largest predominantly Black neighborhood.
The Palm Springs Black History Committee presents community events. including a free basketball tournament, parade and fair.
In addition to these events, support Black-owned businesses during your visit. Wellness hotel The Good House is one of the only Black-owned hospitality properties in southern California. Foodie travelers, consider a stop at Black-owned restaurants Uncle D’s Smokehouse BBQ & Grill and Brown’s BBQ & Soul Food. Head to family-owned Sam Cobb Farms, specializing in varieties of dates. The farm also hosts educational tours to show the inner workings of a date farm. For design lovers, plan visits to clothing and home goods shop Soukie Modern, jewelry and clothing boutique Aneka Brown Designs, and luxury lifestyle brand Summer Colony Living.
