Cinco de Mayo will be here soon, so it’s time to start planning your celebration and there is no better place to do so than Cinco de Mayo’s hometown of Puebla.
Puebla is known for its vibrant and colorful celebrations, with the Cinco de Mayo Festival one of the city’s most popular. The annual event takes place in the historic city center and attracts tourists from all over the world. Celebrations include parades, live music performances, traditional dances and delicious food and drinks. Visitors witness the reenactment of the famous battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. The battle is a symbol of Mexican resistance and victory over the French army.

The parade features locals dressed in colorful costumes, riding on horseback and carrying emblematic banners and flags. Visitors also have the chance to try local cuisine and traditional dishes like mole poblano, a rich, bittersweet dish made from dried poblano peppers and chocolate; chiles en nogada, a patriotic dish made of poblano chiles stuffed with picadillo and topped off with a walnut-based sauce, pomegranate seeds and parsley to complete the colors of the Mexican flag; and cemitas, a unique Pueblan-style sandwich stuffed with carnitas, chipotle peppers, avocado, tomato, papalo, adobe sauce and Oaxacan cheese.
Street vendors sell a variety of snacks and refreshments, including tacos; elote, a Mexican twist on street corn covered with mayonnaise and seasoned with chili powder, fresh lime juice and cotija cheese; and agua fresca.
