Tips / Destination

There’s no place holier to celebrate the resurrection of Christ than Vatican City in Italy. This joyous day in March marks the end of the 40-day period of Lent and the rebirth of Jesus Christ. Catholics around the world will look to Vatican City in hopes to garner wisdom from the Pope’s address on this annual holiday. Spending Easter in Vatican City is like no other experience in the world, especially for followers of the Catholic religion.

For visitors planning to attend one of the masses conducted by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square, tickets are free but they are limited, and usually require an official request six months to one year beforehand. Attendees are advised to arrive for mass anywhere from two to four hours ahead of the start time, which is 10:15 a.m. on Easter Sunday. There also are masses held on Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Easter Saturday, providing better chances to avoid the crowds and catch a glimpse of Pope Francis. Following the mass on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis delivers the blessing known as Urbi et Orbi from his balcony facing the square.

Those who choose not to attend a mass will still be able to feel the excitement surrounding the holiday as Holy Week unfolds throughout the city. From Palm Sunday to Easter Monday, Catholics anticipate the end of Lent and thus welcome the reason to celebrate and feast. On Easter Monday, which is a formal holiday in Italy, Romans will enjoy picnics and family gatherings as they feast on lamb, potatoes and chocolate eggs.
