Puerto Ricans celebrate La Noche de San Juan on June 23, the night before the feast day for St. John the Baptist. Traditionally, the celebration takes place on the beach at midnight and people take three–12 backwards plunges into the water to rid life of all negativity.
Puerto Rican superstitions say to fill your year with luck, so, in order to enjoy a good year, you should:
- Jump over a bonfire
- Burn a piece of paper that has your significant other’s name on it
- Burn something old and personal which will leave behind the bad and start a new phase of life
- Lastly, swim in the ocean after midnight to purify your body and soul
