With Halloween around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan a spooky getaway. West Virginia’s state-wide Paranormal Trail invites travelers to experience haunted locations … if you dare.
The new trail and its accompanying free, interactive digital passport allow visitors to check in to 14 haunted locations throughout the state, earning points and exclusive prizes along the way.
Add these famous haunts throughout the state to your list:
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
The National Historic Landmark served as a sanctuary for mentally ill patients in the mid-1800s and has since been featured on ghost-hunting television shows.
Lake Shawnee Abandoned Amusement Park
This abandoned park is said to be haunted by spirits of people who died on the land before the park opened.
Decommissioned in 1995, this former penitentiary offers paranormal tours detailing its haunted history.
The Ghost Tour of Harpers Ferry
Considered the oldest ghost tour in the country, this tour delves into the history of Harpers Ferry and its ghostly residents.
One of the oldest hotels in West Virginia, this property is home to ghostly children playing tag and spectral men in top hats wandering its halls.
