March is Women’s History Month, and Maine is filled with sites and landmarks pointing to trailblazing women over the centuries. Honor all women at these four Maine locations this March:
Harriet Beecher Stowe House, Brunswick
American author and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852 in this very house. It was also this house where Stowe sheltered John Andrew Jackson, a freedom seeker who escaped from South Carolina. Visit and see Stowe’s writing desk where she wrote the pivotal novel. The house is a National Historic Landmark and a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. Open June–October.

The Sarah Orne Jewett House, South Berwick
This is the home and birthplace of one of Maine’s most influential 19th-century authors, Sarah Orne Jewett. Now a National Historic Landmark, the home reflects Jewett’s artistic and literal freedom. Plan your visit May–October.
