Located along a country road freckled with cornfields and farmland outside of the romantically small village of Marche-en-Famenne, guests are first greeted at the Château d’ Hassonville by a grand iron gate that guards the grounds of this historic hotel. After a short drive through the woods, the gray-stone columns of the chateau appear majestically from behind the drape of a willow tree acting as a tunnel over the road.
This castle hotel is believed to have been established by Louis XIV, the Roi Soleil, who used the 1,606 acres as his private hunting grounds. Today, the grounds are maintained by Alexander Rodrigues and his family, who welcome guests in personally with a guided tour and unparalleled Belgian hospitality.
Although the hotel makes for a perfect stopover for anyone driving from Luxembourg to Brussels, this chateau truly is a retreat on its own with cocktails served in front of a grand fireplace in a parlor perfumed by wood smoke, breakfasts served on the terrace or inside a solarium and generous menus served in a candlelit dining room overlooking a duck pond.
The chateau is a true vacation experience, where the oversized suites and rooms are only a small part of the stay. Guests can try their hand at snooker, take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the grounds, view the chateau from above with a trip in a hot air balloon or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful serenity that encases this amazing destination.
