London has a reputation as an expensive city to visit, but, despite the high cost of living, it is possible to eat well on a budget.

Franco Manca pizza quickly became a sensation after launching in Brixton, and the popularity of its sublime sourdough pizzas allowed the chain to expand to 13 different locations across the city. Not only is the food delicious, it is a bargain with each pizza costing less than $11.

If Japanese food is more to your taste, the tiny Tokyo Diner in Soho offers traditional chicken katsu curry, among other traditional dishes, for around $20.

Grab a British lunch at Pieminister, which offers new takes on the classic. A pie, mash and another side of your choice costs just $12. Get your hands on a hearty meal at Pieminister’s Leather Lane or Gabriel’s Wharf restaurants, or buy one from a supermarket to eat at home.

The standard of Mexican restaurants in London increased significantly over the past few years, and Daddy Donkey provides tasty burritos, tacos and tostadas which won’t break the bank. A shredded beef burrito costs just $10, and you can enjoy it in the cozy environs of the restaurant, or take it away.

For those in the mood for Middle Eastern fare, head to Yalla Yalla near Tottenham Court Road for the $12 two-course lunch special.

The aforementioned restaurants are just a small sample of the variety of world cuisines that form London’s culinary scene and prove that eating decent food does not have to be prohibitively expensive.
