As millennials transition from going on trips with their parents to being parents themselves, the vacation planning process evolves as well. There are many factors to consider when planning a trip with a child or children. Vacation rental booking site HomeAway partnered with FamilyFun magazine for a report on children’s influence on vacation planning.

Of those polled, 87 percent of parents surveyed in the United States said their children played a role in vacation planning, with 13 percent saying their children make the final decision. Experiences are important for kids. Forty-three percent of the children polled said they would rather go on vacation than receive a physical gift for their next birthday. Forty-six percent said seeing a new place or trying new things is their favorite part of vacation.

“People always ask adults their opinion, but what’s really cool about including kids in the research is that we found making memories is just as important to them as it is to their parents,” said Melanie Fish, family travel expert, HomeAway. “Young people value experiences over ‘stuff,’ and families are planning vacations together.”
