Using a tour company can make enjoying once-in-a-lifetime experiences hassle-free. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right one for you? Here’s five questions to get answered before booking to ensure you get the most out of your tour.
What kind of activities will you do?
Do you want a company that jam-packs each hour or would you prefer having a few guided activities and then time to explore on your own? Are you an adrenaline junkie looking for an action-packed schedule or would you prefer exploring a museum? Look for a tour that lines up with your interests to get the most bang for your buck.
Who’s traveling along?
A tour might include your dream itinerary but, if everyone is 30 years older than you, it might not be the experience you’re looking for. Also consider the amount of people you’ll be spending your hours with. An intimate group of eight will have a totally different vibe than seeing the sights with 25 of your closest new friends.
What’s included in the price?
Make sure you know before booking what costs are included and what you’ll be responsible for. A tour with a lower price on paper might not be so inexpensive once extras are added. Ask what airfare, entry fees, meals, types of accommodations and tips are included.
Who’s leading the group?
Knowledgeable guides can take a tour from good to great. Someone who speaks the language fluently and has lived in the area can point out hidden gems and help you feel comfortable in an unknown location. An experienced guide should also have first-aid skills and enjoy working for the company — don’t be shy about asking to chat with the guide prior to booking.
What’s the cancellation and refund policy?
Life happens and, if you can’t make the tour, will your money be refunded or will you be given a credit? What are the deadlines? And, if the trip is cancelled for reasons like weather, political situations, etc., is your deposit refundable? It’s best to know these policies beforehand.
