The Austrian capital of Vienna is a great place to get into the spirit of the holiday season.
Since 1298, there have been special markets in the city at Christmas, and the tradition remains strong today. With handcrafted gifts, punch and sweet chestnut stands, it’s impossible not to enjoy Christmas in Vienna.
In 2016, there will be more than 20 official markets in Vienna, with the most famous arguably taking place in front of the City Hall. This iconic building provides a stunning backdrop to the market, and even welcomes visitors inside for a number of festive activities.
You can shop for tasty treats, unique gifts and festive baubles, before heading off to try some of the famous Viennese cuisine, sweet wine and hot Christmas punch. The markets start Nov. 17, and run until Christmas Eve.
It is advisable to book accommodations and flights as early as possible, because Vienna becomes a popular destination at this time of year. In addition to the markets, there is plenty to see.
Steeped in history, Vienna has some amazing architecture and museums. There are plenty of designer boutiques if you are looking for a really special gift, and the coffee shops provide a perfect spot to refuel after a long day.
Vienna is well served by most major European airlines and has non-stop flights from major U.S. hubs such as New York and Chicago.
