In this age of the Internet, it’s almost impossible to get by without a WiFi connection. While most cafes and hotels offer password-protected networks, some progressive cities offer free citywide WiFi.
Many public parks and transportation hubs in New York City and Los Angeles offer free WiFi within a certain proximity to their location. Like airports, many of these connections are slow or have a time limit. NYC Go has a convenient map of WiFi locations; browse before you plan your next trip.
There are also many cities around that hopped on the free WiFi trend. Bangalore, India, is the first city on the subcontinent to offer free access for the first three hours of use.
In Australia, the city of Perth is leading the way — they offer free unlimited access over a wide swath of the city. Similarly, Barcelona has more than 700 free WiFi hotspots.
Finally, the most whimsical free WiFi can be found in Osaka, Japan. The Osaka Free WiFi requires users to log in every half hour while the lite connection allows one uninterrupted hour of access per day. Both connections include the mascot Osaka Bob, a cartoon character that helps travelers navigate the Internet.
These WiFi-enabled cities make it easy to browse the Internet without running up your phone bill or getting charged roaming fees. Keep an eye out for more WiFi-enabled cities and plan your next trip accordingly.
