History

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. There are events throughout the United States to commemorate the Sesquicentennial. The Civil War Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the battlefields and educating others on this defining time in U.S. history. Experience their work firsthand by attending the anniversary events held on and off the battlefields.

  • College Station, Texas: The Civil War Memorial site dedication on April 9 will recognize the installation of two bronze statues of a Union soldier and Confederate soldier.
  • Gettysburg, Pa.: Dedication Day, the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, takes place at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery from 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m on November 19.
  • Tallahassee, Fla.: Through April 30, the Museum of Florida History hosts the exhibit Florida in the Civil War.
  • Columbia, S.C.: The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum presents From Backrooms to Battlefields: The Buying and Selling of the Confederacy through April 11.
  • Andersonville, Ga.: Experience what it was like at the Andersonville Civil War prison camp during the living history weekend, March 14–15.
  • Clinton, Md.: Follow the escape route taken by President Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, taking place Saturdays in April and September 2015.
