Pump filters are effective but are often too bulky and expensive for the average guy’s camping trip. Others are content with their lightweight chemical treatments, but that means you need to wait 30 minutes for water that tastes funny. Until recently, those were your two options, but Sawyer effectively changed that with their Mini Filter.
By getting rid of pumps and hoses, the Sawyer Mini clocks in at just 59 grams, allowing you to drink clean water straight from the source through the filter. The company claims its 0.1-micron filter will remove 99.99999 percent of all bacteria (salmonella, E.coli) and 99.9999 percent of all protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium). The filter will last for 100,000 gallons of water, but Sawyer says careful cleaning with their packaged syringe will extend its life.
The best part is the Sawyer comes with a squeeze pouch and you can attach it to the mouth of your standard water bottle. There’s also a durable plastic straw, giving you a variety of options for use.
