In 2020, California will open its first beachfront campground in 30 years. The Big Sur-adjacent campground will be located a few miles off Highway 1, slightly off the beaten path of other campgrounds up and down the coast. The new campground will be located in Fort Ord Dunes State Park, approximately one hour north of Big Sur campsites.
Comprising 98 individual campsites and located right on the beach, the new campground will offer campers access to the Pacific Ocean as well as Fort Ord, a state park of 837 acres that neighbors Monterey Bay. The campground will have hookups available for up to 45 RVs as well as 43 tent campsites and 10 walk-in campsites for campers hiking or biking through the area.
Other campground amenities will include picnic tables, fire pits, four restroom buildings with showers and a central amphitheater with audiovisual capabilities.
The campground is part of a larger initiative to improve the entire state park, which served as a military base before it became a state park in 1994.
Between Santa Cruz and Big Sur, the new campground will be the only campsite within 60 miles of its location. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2020.
