The Taj Mahal is the final resting place for the 17th-century emperor Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal. Being one of the world’s most famous pieces of architecture, we can only assume she must have been quite the lady. Whether drawn by romantic notions or a tourist’s checklist, having the best Taj experience is of utmost importance.
Closed on Fridays
If you’re in a pinch, try watching the sunrise or sunset from across the river. Rickshaw drivers know how to get there, but be sure to secure a price and time the night before. Saturday to Thursday, it’s open from sunrise to sunset and tickets must be purchased 24 hours prior to visit.
Getting to and from Agra
Agra is about 200 kilometers south of Delhi, most people’s starting point, and can take anywhere from two to five hours depending on transport. Taking a train is popular and scenic, costing anywhere from 100 to 700 rupees — watch your belongings and be sure to get off at the second Agra station, Agra Cantt (AGC). Cabs are going to run upwards of 5,000 rupees and get stuck in Delhi traffic, so let the cab drivers sucker someone else into that trip.
Where to stay
The Oberoi Amarvilas should be on every traveler’s wish list, but if it’s out of your budget (most likely) at least grab a drink at its opulent bar. A close second — with a much more reasonable price tag — is Hotel Atulyaa Taj. Newly opened, the rooftop pool and spectacular view of the mausoleum make this an instant success.
Where to eat
Many of the hotels include decent restaurants, but try venturing out to Pinch of Spice. It has a wide variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections and an exceptionally attentive and friendly staff.
