Tips / Other

For decades, compression socks have been used to prevent deep vein thrombosis and blood clots. In most cases, compression socks look like really ugly tights. Beauty is skin deep, though, as these socks are very clever as they increase circulation in your legs, prevent the formation of clots and in turn can save your life. But it’s not just the older generation that these compression socks are popular among; the younger generations are taking them up, too.

Compression socks are offering athletes, marathon runners in particular, the promise of quicker recovery rates and faster times. According to manufacturers, these compression socks can increase blood flow and oxygen delivery, as well as reduce lactic acid and slow down fatigue. Consequently, these socks are a hot item among the athletic community.

However, some researchers say compression socks don’t actually show any performance benefits, and that it could all be explained as a simple placebo effect. On the other hand, there is no conclusive evidence from the researchers to invalidate the manufacturer’s claims. So, although it appears the jury is still out on that one, many runners are convinced their performances are improving and, well, you decide.
