Next time you’re in Amsterdam, step away from the touristy attractions and check out some of the coolest street art spots — you’ll be amazed.
“De Blauwe Vioolspeler” or the Blue Violin Player
The story behind the statue is neat and, as it turns out, no one knows exactly who created it — one day it just appeared and since it’s not in anyone’s way, it just remained. Throughout the years, the inhabitants of the Amsterdam area The Jordan started loving the little man and on cold winter days, they gave him a scarf. When the municipality planned on removing the statue, the whole community started protesting. Rumor has it the statue is created by a doctor who lives a few blocks down the road.
Space Invaders
If you’re from an older generation, you more than likely remember the arcade game Space Invaders. It’s the game where you act as the tank and shoot rows of aliens that move in your direction. Nowadays, there’s a street artist called Invader from France who perks up the streets with his colored mosaic art. His happy images are hung throughout various cities. In Amsterdam, it seems as if he has created a scavenger hunt.
The street art in this gallery is neat — they even offer printers for artists on a budget so they can still create their own art. The gallery is chosen as the Greatest Dutch Street Art Gallery and hosts the Dutch Street Art Awards.
If you’re interested in finding more street art and learning about the city’s subcultures, both past and present, check out this 2.5-hour guided walking tour.
