Cyprus, an island nation in the Mediterranean, has a rich history blending influences from nearby Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa and European occupiers. Since the late 1880s, the island has been a favorite for excavators hunting for ancient treasures, and lucky for visitors many such finds are on view at the Cyprus Archaeological Museum.
Located in the heart of the capital city, Nicosia, the museum was founded in 1888 while the island was under British control. Since then it has continuously expanded as archaeologists keep a steady stream of national artifacts pouring into the permanent collection. There is currently only space to show a fraction of the ancient items the museum holds.
The fourteen rooms of the museum are set up chronologically, running from the first evidence of human presence through the rise of Christendom. Jewelry, grave monuments, sculpture and tools trace the evolution of Cypriot culture, from the influences of Rome and the Assyrians to the works with bronze that made the island famous in antiquity.
Cyprus is known for beautiful beaches, sun-drenched homes and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. It’s the perfect getaway for those looking to get all the relaxation of island life without teeming crowds. But while the sand and sun and delicious food is enough to make anyone dreamy, the trip through culture and history offered by the Cyprus Archaeological Museum makes it well worth a visit for history buffs and those interested in learning more about this ancient and storied island.
