Barcelona has no shortage of exhilarating attractions, stimulating nightlife and some of Spain´s (and the world´s) best cuisine. But after the novelty has worn off and the hype has settled, it may be a good opportunity to head to the mountains and reconnect with nature.
Spanish for serrated mountain, Montserrat originated as a quiet setting for a monastery where monks would reside and study under their vows of silence. The modern-day mountains offer a contemporary retreat for city dwellers seeking solace.
From the train station at Placa d´Espanya, the R2 train departs approximately once per hour and travels one hour inland toward the uniquely jagged mountains. Upon de-training, your combination train-cable car ticket lets you board a steep cable car up toward the former monastery and small mountain village where a cafe, gift shop, supermarket and tourism office await. Tour the monastery or take the funicular up to the next highest point for views.
Alternatively, the semi-strenuous climb to Montserrat´s highest peak (Sant Jeroni) is well worth the views that extend from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. Comprised of mostly steps, the upward climb can be tough at times, but plenty of ¨pull-over¨ points exist along the trail where you can rest and snap photos of the supremely original views.
After your literally breathtaking hike, mosey back down the mountain and treat yourself to a glass of Spanish wine in the tiny village before heading back to Barcelona. Serving as the perfect daytrip, a jaunt to Montserrat is easy and unforgettable.
