As the first state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana nearly three years ago, it is still illegal to consume the herb in Colorado’s public spaces unless the facility has been granted the permission and is clearly designated as a cannabis-only establishment. Favorable results of Denver’s Initiative 300; however, may soon allow residents and visitors in the state’s capital city to enjoy the plant and its many forms in allocated cafés and restaurants.
As part of the aforementioned initiative, Denver would launch a four-year test program that will permit specific bars and restaurants in Denver to welcome patrons 21 years old or older who want to consume marijuana within their facility. These facilities would have to apply for the permit, similar to a liquor license, and would be required to heed certain rules and regulations regarding consumption indoors.
Supporters of Initiative 300 have touted that allowing marijuana use within the walls of restaurants facilitates responsible consumption while also contributing to the social aspect of the activity. On the heels of years of confusing consumption laws, Denver denizens will finally receive a clear picture of their rights. As the leader in the future evolvement of marijuana use, Colorado hopes this initiative will encourage forward movement in other states.
