Traveling the world means interacting with various cultures and norms that may not be familiar. What’s considered totally normal on your home turf may be offensive elsewhere, and it’s important to keep that in mind as you see the globe. One instance that may lead to unfortunate cultural faux pas is visiting an Islamic-majority country, be it in Asia, the Middle East or parts of Eastern Europe. Here’s what to know when packing to make sure you are able to respect the culture of your destination country!
Skip the skin-tight clothes.
Although you don’t need to be swimming in your outfits, opt for less form-fitting designs. Jeans and tops that aren’t stretched across your frame can also help you stay cool if the climate is humid.
Nothing low cut or belly baring.
In some countries, you might see locals rocking spaghetti straps. But you are a visitor, and it’s better to err on the side of modesty than upset someone by accident. If you’re wearing short sleeves, keep a light jacket or cardigan handy so that you can cover up if required by any place you want to see, such as a mosque. Leave the deep v-necks and crop tops at home.
Bring a scarf.
Whether you wear it around your neck or keep it in your bag, it’s smart to bring a scarf big enough to cover your hair if need be. Pay attention to locals and if you notice more often than not women have all or part of their hair covered, toss on your scarf. It can also be wrapped around your shoulders in place of a cardigan.
Do your research.
The culture of every country is different, and it’s crucial to have some level of understanding before your trip. Do some research to see what kinds of expectations there will be for tourists, including behavior and dress. If you are in doubt when in country, you can always ask at your hotel to make sure you are being respectful.
