When the sun goes down at Aberdeen Harbor on the southwest shores of Hong Kong, the nightlife begins. Visitors of the city can take a free 10-minute ferry ride from either the Aberdeen Promenade or from Sham Wan pier and experience the iconic floating restaurant known as Jumbo Kingdom.
Created by Dr. Stanley Ho in 1976, this restaurant and shopping area has become one of the most prominent cultural landmarks in all of Hong Kong. However, to call it a restaurant is perhaps misleading. In reality, it is a seven-story neon Chinese Palace. The Jumbo Kingdom can be seen from great distances, as lights line every seam and edge of the structure. Atop the famous building sits both the neon “JUMBO” sign on the left in English, as well as the Cantonese translation on the right. The combination of the many bright signs and lights make the waters of the harbor glow.
Those who journey to the Jumbo Kingdom for lunch will not see the bright glow, but rather experience the colorful shingling and golden painted accents of the exterior. Mounted at many points of the vessel are golden dragons snaking their way around the many pillars.
Finally, the interior of the restaurant is decorated in red and gold features. Guests will find exceptional service and amazing fine dining.
