Portland, Maine, draws visitors for its prime waterfront location and array of cultural and culinary opportunities. Don’t spend your entire budget on dining in Portland. Stop at these great spots for a taste of Maine without hurting your wallet.

Duckfat

This popular sandwich shop is known for, you guessed it, duck fat fries. The rich, hand-cut, Belgian-style fries are fried in duck fat and served with a dipping sauce of your choice for $5. Go a step further and order the fries as poutine, topped with cheese curd, duck gravy and chives for $8. Sandwiches start at $11.

El Rayo Taqueria

Enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine in Portland at El Rayo Taqueria. The popular spot serves items like tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Weekly specials include different $6.95 entrées Monday–Wednesday and $6.95 for a breakfast burrito and a coffee daily.

Leonardo’s Pizza

Grab lunch at this Greek-style pizza place. Expect to see unique topping combinations like goat cheese honey, bacon cheeseburger, roasted potato and Thai chicken. Take advantage of the lunch special with a soda and a slice for less than $5. There are two additional locations in Vermont.

Susan’s Fish-n-Chips

A visit to Portland isn’t complete without sampling fresh Maine seafood. Stop at this no-frills seafood restaurant for great daily specials. Monday fish sandwiches cost $2.50 and Wednesday all haddock dishes are $1 off.
