There’s no shortage of advice articles listing essential items for planning a backpacking trip. In truth, it’s not completely cut and dry. Your packed items will largely depend on the region traveled, the climate and your personal preference. However, there are a few non-essential items that will cause headaches, backaches and heartaches if packed. The lighter the mightier, and after a week of hoofing it, unpacking and storing your bag, you’ll wholeheartedly agree. In other words, do not take these items.
Pillow
Yes, yes. That night train sure would be more comfortable with a pillow. In truth, your head will rest fine on a balled-up sweater, hoodie or jacket. A pillow is a huge space-taker with little upside. Being resourceful is key.
Towel
This may be preference, but towels are typically available with lodging. There may be a small fee, but packing a wet towel with your belongings is a smelly, mildew-riddled proposition. If a towel is a must-have, then pack a small one or a quick-drying travel towel.
Extra Shoes
The ones on your foot should suffice. Bulky and heavy (or high-heeled and pointless), extra shoes aren’t worth it. That said, packing a good pair of flip-flops or sandals may be a good idea. You’ll feel like airing out and relaxing once you’ve reached a destination.
Bar Soap
Slippery, slimy and an all-around messy hassle, bar soap is definitely a non-essential. Soap? Yes, it’s essential, but liquid soap is a more manageable option.
Nice Jewelry
Nope. Keep the Queen’s jewels at home. Nothing says, “Steal Me” more than a piece of nice jewelry shimmering in the moonlight.
Beauty Products
You’re not going to the ball. Toiletries are essential, but packing four shades of blush is not. However, travel-specific beauty wipes, which can include night cream, facial cleanser and moisturizers, may be a more practical alternative.
Extra Clothes (Just in Case)
Think of packing clothes in terms of hot, cold and wet. Again, it will depend largely on the climate, but clothes should be basic and easy to layer. Clothes don’t make the man or woman, especially on the road.
