Trazee’s Favorite Airport in the World for 2015, Munich Airport is a shining example of a sustainable and eco-friendly travel choice. With a focus on keeping ecosystem impacts to a minimum, the airport continues to reach nature conservation milestones of momentous proportions.

Everyone knows the aviation industry produces a large amount of the world’s total carbon emissions. Munich Airport is doing its best to counteract this fact through a few simple steps. The airport generates more than half of the power needed to run the entirety of their operations all on site in their own heat, power and cooling plant, allowing them to save almost 30,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year. Fuels used on airport grounds in more than 150 vehicles include both a diesel/vegetable oil mix and bio-ethanol. Discounted landing fees are also offered to aircraft that produce the least amount of noise pollution during take-off and landing operations.

In addition, more than two-thirds of the Munich Airport property is made of green space. There are more than 6,000 trees specially planted to serve as traffic guides along the main roads, as well as a buffer zone created around the airport consisting of almost 200 acres of native forestry and almost 300 acres of lawn.

In 2011, Airport Council International Europe awarded Munich Airport level 3 accreditation for their Optimization performance, recognizing the airport’s effective and sustainable reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
