Explore the Cloudforest of Tsachila, Ecuador

At first glance, Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas may not appear a great destination for visitors to Ecuador, but a short trip from the center provides an opportunity to experience a unique indigenous culture.

Ecuador’s third-largest city is stiflingly hot and its position between the mountains and the coast make it a commercial hub. Unless you are here on business, its most fascinating aspect is the Tsachila community which lends its name to the city.

Tsachila communities live on the outskirts of the city, in areas of fertile cloudforest. Some of the communities are open to visitors, part of a program to raise awareness of the Tsachila and their way of life. Visits can be arranged by the Kashama Hotel, or Spanish-speakers can ask the locals how to arrive at the community.

Upon arrival you may be struck by the distinctive red hair sported by Tsachila men, all of whom sport a closely shaved back and sides and a pointed, red top.

The Tsachila are happy to receive guests and offer overnight accommodation. A Spanish-speaking guide will take you on a hike through the forest, pointing out different plants and their function in Tsachila society.

Small pox decimated the Tsachila community with the arrival of the Spanish, and the once mighty people are now greatly reduced in number. Learn more about the history of the people on your way around the forest.
