Exploring Avignon, France, on Foot

Destination

The compact, ancient city center of Avignon, hemmed in by its medieval ramparts, is easily explored on foot. And thankfully so, because the hodgepodge of narrow lanes can be confusing and stressful to navigate by car.

As you walk, you’ll find a curious mix of young, hip urbanites strolling streets clogged with fashionable shops and quiet back alleys surrounded by medieval buildings. Much of the city is home to lively cafes that, in warm weather, offer sidewalk seating for outstanding people-watching. A large part of the city’s charm is a visitor’s ability to soak in the culture by picking any street and wandering. It’s hard to go wrong here.

If you’re making a list, be sure to check out Avignon’s main claim to fame, the austere Palace of the Popes, where seven popes resided during the Avignon Papacy from 1309 to 1377. You can explore the complex — and note its cold stone structure compared with the Vatican’s regal setting — via self-guided audio tour.

Head to Parc des Rochers des Doms for a panoramic view, and walk on the Pont d’Avignon, the remains of a 12th-century bridge jutting into the Rhone River. Place de l’Horloge is a popular spot for lounging and the intersection of Rue de la République and Place de l’Horloge is home to the best shops. You might pick up some picnic fixings at Les Halles, a massive market with stalls peddling fish, produce, meats and more.
