British Columbia’s stunning Yoho National Park sits in the Canadian Rockies, just a few minutes’ from Alberta’s popular Lake Louise area. But Yoho is smaller, with fewer crowds and a more intimate experience. And you still get all the classic Canadian Rockies scenery.
Yoho has several areas worth visiting:
- Emerald Lake, with its otherworldly blue water and towering mountains, makes for a great place to spend the day hiking or canoeing. Stop by the lodge after for a glass of wine and a great meal.
- Yoho Valley has the enormous Takakkaw Falls and plenty of great hikes as well. You can end your day in the valley with a meal at the cozy Cathedral Mountain Lodge.
- Field, a small town at the heart of the park where a number of guesthouses, including the excellent Truffle Pigs Lodge and restaurant are situated. This is a great town to base your travels or simply stop in to refuel. It’s also home to the visitor center for the national park.
- Lake O’Hara is another stunning alpine lake with a picturesque lodge, but a bit harder to get to as it requires a bus reservation that must be made in advance, or you can chance a last-minute cancelation.
