September marks the beginning of fall, and what better way to enjoy the new season than in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada? From glamping at local cideries to tasting apple beverages, here are some exciting fall activities and events to experience this season in Victoria.
Orchard Activities
Head to Merridale Cidery & Distillery to taste its award-winning ciders and spirits celebrating the spirit of Cowichan Valley. Book a stay in one of the distillery’s luxury one-bedroom yurts for the ultimate glamping experience. Available through mid-October, these unique accommodations allow for more time to enjoy the many beverages offered on site.
On Saanich Peninsula, take in panoramic water views or experience tours and tastings focusing on the crafting of traditionally fermented ciders at Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse. Situated on a 10-acre farm, this farm and ciderhouse boasts more than 1,300 apple trees and more than 50 varieties of heirloom apples.
On Oct. 2, Apple Luscious Organic Orchard hosts the Salt Spring Apple Festival. More details will come as the festival approaches.
Leaf Peeping
Goldstream Provincial Park offers trails filled with fall foliage. Wander through its trails to take in its majestic waterfalls and wildlife. Or head to the Gardens at Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, located just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria, to see vibrant leaf colors on the more than 103 acres.
In its peak bloom in the fall season, Butchart Gardens’ Japanese Garden erupts into bright hues across its acer plants and Japanese maples. Between September and October, Butchart Gardens’ 700 dahlias, field nursery and greenhouses of orange, yellow and bronze chrysanthemums burst into great hues.
Salmon Run
Millions of salmon make their way up streams, creeks and rivers of the Pacific Northwest between mid-October and early December, journeying back to their home pools where a new batch of salmon will soon emerge. Witness this natural phenomenon at Victoria’s Goldstream River, where salmon can be spotted for about nine weeks. Visitors can also support nature education at Goldstream Nature House through its Salmon Run 5k on Oct. 17.
